Sci-Fi Summer Reading Challenge 2022

SCI-FI SUMMERReading Challenge

There’s Sci-Fi November and Vintage Sci-Fi January, but for me, the Summer is the best time of year for reading Science Fiction. I hadn’t planned on doing these anymore, but #WyrdandWonder inspired me to bring this challenge back  So, from June 21st, the official first day of Summer, to the 21st of September (the day before the Autumnal Equinox), I’m reading as much Sci-Fi as possible. I’ve got a lot of it on my TBR shelves, and I’m inviting all of you to join me!

Here are the challenge levels:

  • Red Shirt – 1 to 5 books
  • Viper Pilot – 6 to 10 books
  • Jedi – 11 to 15 books
  • Time Lord – 16 or more books

This year, I’m taking it easy, and shooting for Viper Pilot. I read an average of 6 books a month, but a lot of the Sci-Fi books I’d like to try this year are longer, and I don’t want to zap the fun out of the challenge with the unnecessary pressure to meet a deadline.

Any book of at least 100 pages that is classified as Science Fiction, including any Sci-Fi subgenres, qualifies for this challenge.  That means audiobooks, physical books, ebooks, library books, free books, other borrowed books, anthologies, and graphic novels are all acceptable options.  You may also count any Sci-Fi book that counts towards another reading challenge.

  • This check-in is for June 10th – 16th.
  • My mood has been bouncing all over the place, so I’ve just been doing what I can when I can, and saying “F it” to the rest.  I need to reestablish a self-care routine of some kind.

Building the Book Fort

“Building the Book Fort” is a weekly post where I track my bookish life.

Currently Reading:

  • The Stolen Marriage by Diane Chamberlain
  • Equal Rites by Terry Pratchett
  • Resistance by Tori Amos

Finished:

  • Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant
  • Dinosaur Therapy by James Stewart (@dinosandcomics)
  • Your Guide to Not Getting Murdered in a Quaint English Village by Maureen Johnson
  • An Elderly Lady Must Not Be Crossed by Helene Tursten

Total pages read this week: 783

Total books for 2022: 41 of 85.

I started feeling depressed and not in the mood for anything that required critical thinking, hence the 3 short, light, and hilarious books in my “Finished” section. Into the Drowning Deep was a very satisfying Horror novel, perfect for the Summer, though it did have a lot of setup to get through before the killing began.

#FitReaders Check-In

  • This check-in is for June 3rd – 9th.
  • I’ve slipped back into another depression, so I haven’t been doing much of anything.  Luckily, my plants are doing ok thanks to the rain this past week.  I’m glad I didn’t decide to grow anything other than flowers.

I needed something to cheer me up after finishing The Stranger’s Shadow and saying goodbye to Echo, and Equal Rites turned out to be just what I needed. Unfortunately, I’ve been too tired to read much of it by the end of the day so I’m only a little more than 50 pages in.

#FitReaders Check-In

  • This check-in is for May 27th – June 2nd.
  • I re-potted a couple of the little plants I had and I also bought and planted a blackberry bush, though right now (and apparently for the next year?!) it’s just a stick with roots.  This weekend, I might plant some of the summer bulbs I bought when I went to buy the plant pots, but I didn’t realize how much space they’ll need, so I’m thinking about buying some more pots.  I also realized that I have two heavy-duty plant hooks already attached to the patio cover, so I might buy a couple of flowering plants to hang from them.
  • Another thing I found at the store was an inexpensive hammock.  My hope is to make the back patio as pretty and relaxing as possible so that I spend more time outside, even if all I’m doing is lazing in the hammock with a book and a tall glass of ice tea.

The Stranger’s Shadow is the last book of “The Labyrinths of Echo” series to be translated into English, and that’s frustrating because there are 8 books in the series and this 4th book has become a bit of a comfort read for me after overly busy days at work. The 5th book was published in 1997 and translated into several other languages, so I’m guessing it’s not likely to ever be translated into English, though I don’t know why.

#FitReaders Check-In

  • This check-in is for May 20th – 26th.
  • It’s still raining a lot. On top of that, I had to spend the first part of my day getting rid of the ants that found a way into the house and made a little highway to and from my cats’ food.
  • One good thing about the rain is that the flowers I planted are shooting up rapidly without any effort on my part.  I don’t know when they’ll bloom, but I’m looking forward to having something pretty right outside the sliding glass door for me to look at in the mornings.

It took quite a bit, but I’m finally enjoying The Will and the Wilds. I’m hoping to finish it today, though I’m not sure what audiobook I will start next for #WyrdandWonder.

I was stuck in bed for two days this past week, and that is the only reason I was able to get so much reading accomplished. Out of all the books I finished, Serafina and the Seven Stars was my favorite.

#FitReaders Check-In

  • This check-in is for May 13th – 19th.
  • It’s been raining a lot again, and I ended up in so much pain by Sunday night that I had to take Monday and Tuesday off from work.  I got a ton of reading done, but I was still so bored being stuck in bed that I went to work Wednesday despite probably needing another day of rest.
  • The MRI I had at the beginning of the month shows that my back is worse than initially thought, so my doctor has referred me to a spine specialist.
