“Monday’s Minutes” is a weekly post in which I track my bookish life.

Currently Reading:

  • A History of Reading by Alberto Manguel
  • The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear by Walter Moers
  • Magician: Apprentice by Raymond E. Feist
  • The Book of Candlelight by Ellery Adams
  • The Princess and the Goblin by George MacDonald
  • The Complete Poems of Walt Whitman

Finished:

  • The Essential Writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson ed. by Brooks Atkinson
  • Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass
  • Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll
  • Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne

Total pages read this week: 843

Total books for the year: 37 of 85. I had a successful #BoutofBooks! All of the books I finished were for the online classes I’m taking. I’m probably going to take a break from reading assignments this week, and get back to the other books I’ve been neglecting.

Total books for the year: 33 of 85. I forgot that today is the first day of #BoutofBooks! How did that happen? I got distracted by a new-to-me game called “Stardew Valley,” and everything else fell to the wayside. The only thing I did accomplish was getting nearly all of my Emerson reading completed for the online class I’m taking. My post for Bout of Books will be up shortly, especially since I’m in need of a digital detox, and a week-long reading challenge is the perfect prescription for that.

Total pages read this week: 309

Total books for the year: 33 of 85. I didn’t do a lot of reading this week, but I did listen to quite a few podcasts about books, including Book Riot’s Annotated and The Prancing Pony Podcast. The latter discusses one chapter of a book by J.R.R. Tolkien per episode, starting with The Silmarillion.

Total pages read this week: 1120

Total books for the year: 32 of 85. This weekend was Dewey’s 24-Hour #Readathon, and I focused on Middle-Grade Fiction. I love readathons because it all but guarantees I’ll get through roughly 1k pages, and probably finish at least 3 books. #BoutofBooks is coming up soon, so keep your eye out for my sign-up post!

Total pages read this week: 308

Total books for the year: 27 of 85. I started a course on edX titled, “The American Renaissance: Classic Literature of the 19th Century.” The first assigned readings are by Ralph Waldo Emerson, so I ordered The Essential Writings.

Finished:

  • A Grown-Up Guide to Dinosaurs by Ben Garrod
  • Harry Potter: A History of Magic by The British Library
  • Junkyard Cats by Faith Hunter

Total pages read this week: 448

Total books for the year: 26 of 85. All three of the books I finished this week are audiobooks. Junkyard Cats was a little bit more serious than I was expecting, but I suppose that’s what I get for not reading the synopsis first. The other two were pure Non-Fiction fun. They made me want to sign up for some kind of a class so that I can stretch my brain a little bit and keep my mind off of the craziness going on IRL. I can’t decide what I want to learn about, though, from the seemingly millions of free options out there, but I’m thinking I want to take some type of Literature class.

  • Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
  • Anne’s House of Dreams by L.M. Montgomery

Total pages read this week: 925

Total books for the year: 23 of 85. Anne’s House of Dreams was exactly what I needed right now. Especially after the horror of Brave New World. I’m going to avoid Sci-Fi, especially Dystopian Sci-Fi, for awhile, and focus on books that make me happy.

Total books for the year: 19 of 85. My Life with Bob is comforting. A History of Reading is cozy. Lost Books and Old Bones is a wonderful audiobook to settle into when I’m tired. I foresee this kind of reading will continue throughout the next month.

Total books for the year: 18 of 85. This past weekend was the #StayHome24in48 Readathon. I probably did more sleeping than reading, but I stayed off the internet unless it had something to do with the readathon, and I avoided checking the news. It was exactly what I needed, and I’m considering doing the same every weekend for at least the next month or so.
