#BoutofBooks – Day 2

The Bout of Books readathon is organized by Amanda Shofner and Kelly Rubidoux Apple. It’s a weeklong readathon that begins 12:01am Monday, May 11th and runs through Sunday, May 17th in YOUR time zone. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are daily challenges, Twitter chats, and exclusive Instagram challenges, but they’re all completely optional. For Bout of Books 28 information and updates, visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team

I read a bit of Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass for my American Renaissance class, and then I started Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll for the other class I’m taking, “The Story of the Hobbit.”

I mostly read my reading assignments for the American Renaissance course I’m taking. I finished The Essential Writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson and read a bit of Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. I also started the audiobook of The Book of Candlelight by Ellery Adams to take a break, and then I read some of Magician: Apprentice by Raymond E. Feist before bed. All in all, it was a good reading day.

If you read my “Monday’s Minutes” post, you know that I’m in need of a digital detox, and a week-long readathon is the perfect thing for that. I will likely be concentrating on my reading assignments for the 2 online classes I’m currently taking, “The American Renaissance: Classic Literature of the 19th Century”, and “The Story of The Hobbit.” The first one is through edX and the second course is through Signum University. However, I do have 3 other books I’m in the middle of reading, so it’s a toss up as to what I’ll actually read this week.

My Goals

  • Read.  Read.  Read.
  • Finish at least one of the books I’m currently reading.
  • Finish one more book from my TBR.

Books to Read

  • The Essential Writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson
  • A History of Reading by Alberto Manguel
  • Magician: Apprentice by Raymond E. Feist
  • The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear by Walter Moers
  • At least one book from my “TBR” bookshelf on Goodreads.

Updates

I will be posting an update each day with the amount of time I read, the number of pages read that day and the titles of any of the books I’ve finished.

Monday’s Minutes

“Monday’s Minutes” is a weekly post in which I track my bookish life.

Currently Reading:

  • A History of Reading by Alberto Manguel
  • The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear by Walter Moers
  • The Essential Writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson ed. by Brooks Atkinson
  • Magician: Apprentice by Raymond E. Feist

Total pages read this week: 644

Total books for the year: 33 of 85. I forgot that today is the first day of #BoutofBooks! How did that happen? I got distracted by a new-to-me game called “Stardew Valley,” and everything else fell to the wayside. The only thing I did accomplish was getting nearly all of my Emerson reading completed for the online class I’m taking. My post for Bout of Books will be up shortly, especially since I’m in need of a digital detox, and a week-long reading challenge is the perfect prescription for that.

What are you reading (or not reading because of a game)?

Total books for the year: 33 of 85. I didn’t do a lot of reading this week, but I did listen to quite a few podcasts about books, including Book Riot’s Annotated and The Prancing Pony Podcast. The latter discusses one chapter of a book by J.R.R. Tolkien per episode, starting with The Silmarillion.

Down the TBR Hole #75

Image: hjl

Down the TBR Hole was started by Lia over at Lost in a Story.

How it works:

  • Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

I will be repeating this process until I’ve filtered out my entire TBR.

It’s been quite a while since I’ve done one of these posts.  My TBR pile was down to 655 books, but between December of last year and now, it has gone up to 666.  If I remember correctly, my goal for last year was 650, which might have happened, but obviously isn’t the case now, despite having already read 33 books this year.

This week’s books:

Skeen’s Leap by Jo Clayton – KEEP.  The synopsis had me at “gritty space adventure.”  This book sounds like a perfect addition to my Sci-Fi Summer TBR.

The Shore of Women by Pamela Sargent- KEEP. I’m going to give this one the 50 page test only because it is considered a classic of Feminist Science Fiction.

Unexpected Stories by Octavia Butler – KEEP.  This one will also get the 50 page test, but because it’s Octavia Butler.

Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand – KEEP.  This one sounds like the kind of Horror that is right up my alley.

The Last Time I Saw Paris by Lynn Sheene – GO. This story sounds like nothing but a Romance that happens to take place in France during WWII.  No, thanks.

My TBR pile is down one to 665 books, and my next post will be mostly Cozy Mysteries.  If my TBR decreases at all over the next couple of weeks, it will be from finishing books.
