#BoutofBooks 41!

The Bout of Books readathon is organized by Amanda Shofner and Kelly Rubidoux Apple. It’s a weeklong readathon that begins 12:01 am Monday, August 19th and runs through Sunday, August 25th in YOUR time zone. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are reading sprints, daily Discord questions, and exclusive Instagram challenges, but they’re all completely optional. For all Bout of Books 41 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team

I haven’t participated in “Bout of Books” in several years, and I sadly learned that this one will be the last. They’ve moved most of the activities to Discord, which I don’t use (it gives me flashbacks to IRC chat rooms from the 90s) so I’ll only be participating in the actual readathon by reading as much as possible instead of doing other things like watching TV. I’ll mostly be finishing the books I’ve been reading, all of which I’m nearly at the halfway point.

My Goals

  • Read.  Read.  Read.
  • Finish at least 3 books.

Books to Read

  • Packing for Mars by Mary Roach
  • The Undays of Aralias Lyons by K.L. Horvath
  • A Fatal Groove by Olivia Blacke
  • Another book from my TBR.

Updates

Unlike past Bout of Books readathons, I will only be posting a wrap-up at the end instead of a daily update.

#BoutofBooks 33 – Day 7 & Wrap-Up

It’s a weeklong readathon that begins 12:01 am Monday, January 3rd, and runs through Sunday, January 9th in YOUR time zone. Bout of Books is low-pressure. I was listening to The Clanlands Almanac by Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish when my earbuds ran out of battery, and then I got busy doing a bunch of stuff that required my concentration, so I ended up not listening to any more of the book. I also didn’t read anything else, so this was my worst reading day out of the whole week.

  • Time Read:  0 hours 9 minutes
  • Total Time Read: 18 hours 23 minutes
  • Pages Read: 6
  • Total Pages Read: 716
  • Books Finished: 0
  • Total Number of Books Read: 2

Overall, I didn’t do too bad. I didn’t meet my goal of finishing 3 books, but I at least finished 2, and while I didn’t read as much as I did during Bout of Books 32, I still read a lot more than I usually read in a week.

I got most of the house cleaned and chores done while listening to The Clanlands Almanac by Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish. I didn’t finish it, but I only have about 3 hours left, so I might finish it today. I also read a few pages of The Essential Tea Guide by Teressa Hansch while I was waiting for the oven to heat up for dinner.

I listened to some more of The Clanlands Almanac by Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish, as usual, and then finished Love, Lies, and Hocus Pocus: Revelations by Lydia Sherrer after the Boyfriend and I ate dinner. I decided to pick out and start another ebook to read during my breaks at work so I wouldn’t have to figure that out at work on Monday, and I chose The Essential Tea Guide by Teressa Hansch.

Today, I’ll be listening to The Clanlands Almanac while I clean the house and do other chores, and perhaps go for a walk after I’m done. I don’t know if I’ll finish it, since I still have nearly 7 and a half hours left, but who knows?

I listened to a little bit more of The Clanlands Almanac by Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish, and read a nice chunk of Love, Lies, and Hocus Pocus: Revelations by Lydia Sherrer, as well as a few pages of Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone by Diana Gabaldon. I don’t know if I’ll finish any of them until this weekend, but I’m hoping to get to at least the halfway point of Revelations today.

I finished The Lef-Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix as I was pulling into a parking spot at work. On my way home, I started The Clanlands Almanac by Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish, and while I was taking my breaks and lunch, I started reading Love, Lies, and Hocus Pocus: Revelations by Lydia Sherrer. I read another 17 pages of Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone by Diana Gabaldon before bed, and while that means I didn’t read nearly as much as on Monday, I had a pretty good reading day nonetheless.

I’m nearly done with The Lef-Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix, and will likely finish it this morning during my commute to work. I thought I had read a lot more of Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone by Diana Gabaldon, but it turns out I only got through about 15 pages. I love the story so far, but so much is happening, and there are a lot of characters, so I’m always shocked to find out that I hardly read anything at all.

This Bout of Books is going to be all about finishing as many books as I can. It’s the first readathon of the year for me, and usually is the week I get a good head start on my annual reading goal. I also want to finish the couple of books I was in the middle of at the end of 2021.

My Goals

  • Read.  Read.  Read.
  • Finish at least 3 books.

Books to Read

  • Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone by Diana Gabaldon
  • The Left-Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix
  • At least 1 more book from my “TBR” bookshelf on Goodreads.

Updates

I will be posting an update each day with the amount of time I read, the number of pages read that day, and the titles of any of the books I’ve finished.

While I didn’t finish Cannonbridge by Jonathan Barnes, I only have about 65 pages left. I also did some #audiocleaning in my office while listening to some of The Cuckoo’s Cry by Caroline Overington.

Overall, this Bout of Books went better than the last. I got through more pages, read for a longer amount of time, and finished more books. I more than met my goal for this readathon, and I’m well on my way to catching up to my annual reading goal of 90 books. I’m looking forward to the next Bout of Books, in January, but until then, #RIP is right around the corner, and then another Dewey’s 24-Hour #Readathon in October.
