Building the Book Fort

“Building the Book Fort” is a weekly post where I track my bookish life.

Currently Reading:

  • The Final Trade by Joe Hart
  • Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Finished:

  • All Systems Red by Martha Wells
  • Never Fade by Alexandra Bracken

Total pages read this week: 416

Total books for 2022: 46 of 85.

Two books finished for #SciFiSummer! If I manage to keep this up, I might get “Jedi” (11 to 15 books). Illuminae is a bit of a chunkster, though, so it’s going to take a while to finish. That’s why I chose “Viper Pilot” (6 to 10 books). I want to be able to enjoy longer books and not deliberately stick to the shorter ones to reach a lofty goal.

#SciFiSummer got off to a great start as soon as I finished the two non-Sci-Fi books I had been reading. I plan to finish All Systems Red today, but I’m not sure what book from my TBR pile I’ll choose after that.

I’ve decided to bring back #SciFiSummer, and since the first official day of Summer is Tuesday, I’m trying to finish my current reads before I start anything else. Tomorrow, I have the day off, since it’s a Federal holiday, so I’m hoping that will be enough time, along with whatever time I have to read today to finish The Stolen Marriage. I already know I’m going to finish Resistance today while I do some housework.

I started feeling depressed and not in the mood for anything that required critical thinking, hence the 3 short, light, and hilarious books in my “Finished” section. Into the Drowning Deep was a very satisfying Horror novel, perfect for the Summer, though it did have a lot of setup to get through before the killing began.

I needed something to cheer me up after finishing The Stranger’s Shadow and saying goodbye to Echo, and Equal Rites turned out to be just what I needed. Unfortunately, I’ve been too tired to read much of it by the end of the day so I’m only a little more than 50 pages in.

The Stranger’s Shadow is the last book of “The Labyrinths of Echo” series to be translated into English, and that’s frustrating because there are 8 books in the series and this 4th book has become a bit of a comfort read for me after overly busy days at work. The 5th book was published in 1997 and translated into several other languages, so I’m guessing it’s not likely to ever be translated into English, though I don’t know why.

It took quite a bit, but I’m finally enjoying The Will and the Wilds. I’m hoping to finish it today, though I’m not sure what audiobook I will start next for #WyrdandWonder.

I was stuck in bed for two days this past week, and that is the only reason I was able to get so much reading accomplished. Out of all the books I finished, Serafina and the Seven Stars was my favorite.

Both The Well of Lost Plots and Paper and Fire were excellent books, but I’m not enjoying either Fablehaven or The Will and the Wilds. In Fablehaven, the plot only gets moved along by one of the kids’ refusal to listen or do what he’s told, no matter how many times the very serious consequences prove that his actions affect more than just himself. However, I’m not sure why I can’t get into The Will and the Wilds. Maybe it’s the narrator of the audiobook, but either way, it’s probably going to take me longer than usual to get through it unless something changes.

#WyrdandWonder has me excited about reading Fantasy all month long! And now that I have enough space on my bookshelves for all of my physical TBR, I’m picking up whatever Fantasy book I want to read regardless of format. I no longer feel the pressure to read my physical books exclusively, and it’s a great feeling to get back to some of the series I haven’t been reading because they’re on my Kindle.

Yesterday was Dewey’s 24-Hour Readathon, and I’m not sure I’ll be participating in them anymore. It went from being a huge event that I greatly looked forward to every April and October to an event that the hosts don’t seem to want to be bothered with putting any effort into anymore. I think in the future I’m going to put aside a weekend for reading during the same months to keep the tradition on my own.
