#BoutofBooks 32 – Day 5

The Bout of Books readathon is organized by Amanda Shofner and Kelly Rubidoux Apple. It’s a weeklong readathon that begins at 12:01 am Monday, August 16th, and runs through Sunday, August 22nd in YOUR time zone. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are reading sprints, Twitter chats, and exclusive Instagram challenges, but they’re all completely optional. For all Bout of Books 32 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team

I finished The Stranger’s Magic by Max Frei and started Cannonbridge by Jonathan Barnes, which means I’ve gone beyond my goal for this Bout of Books with 2 more days to go. I doubt I’ll finish Cannonbridge today, but I’m hoping to finish it before the end of the weekend.

For some reason, I couldn’t get into my blog’s dashboard yesterday to post my progress. I didn’t read nearly as much (121 pages) as the previous days or finish any books. The same goes for yesterday. I read a bit of The Stranger’s Magic by Max Frei, but I still have about 60 pages left. Instead of reading all evening, I went to a movie theater for the first time since before the pandemic to see “Black Widow.” Hopefully, I’ll finish The Stranger’s Magic today.

I finished Sovereign by Jeff Hirsch while I was out grocery shopping. Then I started The Cuckoo’s Cry by Caroline Overington on my way home. Before I went to the grocery store, I stopped at a little restaurant nearby to get breakfast, and while I was finishing my tea, I started reading The Light Fantastic by Terry Pratchett and then picked it back up after I got back home. It’s so good, I got halfway through it before I went to bed, and I’m hoping to finish it today.

Today starts #BoutofBooks 32! The books I’ve been reading this past week have been really good, and I’m hoping that will continue through this week. It’s supposed to rain a lot where I live, so I’ve already got the perfect excuse to stay indoors with a stack of books.

#BoutofBooks 32!

This Bout of Books is going to be all about finishing as many books as I can. I have a lot of books I’ve been meaning to read, but haven’t had the time. This week, I’m making the time.

My Goals

  • Read.  Read.  Read.
  • Finish at least 3 books.

Books to Read

  • Solutions and Other Problems by Allie Brosh
  • Sovereign by Jeff Hirsh
  • At least 1 more book from my “TBR” bookshelf on Goodreads.

Updates

I will be posting an update each day with the amount of time I read, the number of pages read that day, and the titles of any of the books I’ve finished.

Down the TBR Hole #89

How it works:

  • Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

My TBR pile went up a couple of books to 1117, despite me finishing several books since my last “Down the TBR Hole” post.  Of course, I keep finding more books to add to my wishlist.

This week’s books:

Labyrinth by Kate Mosse – KEEP.  I came across this book in a Half Price Books store when I was still living in Austin.  I’m a sucker for stories taking place in France, especially when they involve mythology, so I bought it without any clue as to whether or not it would be any good.

Moranifesto by Caitlin Moran – KEEP.  I love Moran and everything I’ve read of hers so far, so  buying this was a no-brainer.

The Hunger Games and Philosophy ed. by George A. Dunn and Nicolas Michaud, – KEEP.  “The Hunger Games” is one of my all-time favorite trilogies, and the 3rd book, especially, helped me process a lot of my experiences in the Army.  I don’t know if this book will do the same, but I am interested to read about the books from a philosophical perspective.

The Essential World of Darkness ed. by Stewart Wieck and Anna Branscome – KEEP. I took this book out of a box of books a friend was getting rid of, but had no idea it was an anthology of stories set in the world of a popular RPG series I have never played.  The Boyfriend says I’ll probably still enjoy it, so I’m going to give it a shot.

Revenge of the Star Survivors by Michael Mershel – KEEP.  I picked this up at the Texas Book Festival several years ago after attending one of the panel events that the author was on.  It sounded like the perfect Middle-Grade-beginning-of-the-school-year book for me.
My TBR pile is holding steady at 1117 books. After scrolling down the list a bit, I don’t think I’ll be getting rid of any of my books in the next few posts, but who knows, maybe there’s a surprise waiting for all of us somewhere in there.

#ShelfLove – 28 of 51 books from my TBR.

Total pages read this week: 585

Total books for the year: 46 of 90.

I’m working from home now, and that means I’m spending less time listening to audiobooks, but more time reading physical books. I’m nearly always done with work before the Boyfriend (who also works remotely) so I spend what used to be my commute time reading on the couch.

Thanks to the #ReverseReadathon this weekend, I was able to get through most of The Ruthless Lady’s Guide to Wizardry, and I plan to finish it before the end of the week.
