Monday’s Minutes

“Monday’s Minutes” is a weekly post in which I track my bookish life.

Currently Reading:

  • We Are Legion (We Are Bob) by Dennis E. Taylor
  • Doomsday Book by Connie Willis

Finished:

  • Cannonbridge by Jonathan Barnes
  • The Cuckoo’s Cry by Caroline Overington
  • The Angel’s Kiss by Justin Richards

Challenges:

#ShelfLove – 35 of 51 books from my TBR.

Total pages read this week: 728

Total books for the year: 55 of 90.

Doomsday Book is so good that I’ve been deliberately cooking the easiest dinners I can and then going to bed earlier than usual so I can keep reading. However, I’m really glad I didn’t decide to read it sooner, but I can’t say why because *spoilers*. I had no idea what I was in for when I started reading it since the book blurb only mentions a “crisis, ” and really, that could be anything, especially when it involves time travel.

R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril XVI

The R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril challenge, otherwise known as R.I.P. takes place every September 1st through October 31st.

The purpose of the R.I.P. Challenge is to enjoy books that could be classified as Mystery, Suspense, Thriller, Dark Fantasy, Gothic, Horror, or Supernatural.

There are multiple levels of participation (Perils):

  • Peril of the Fiction – Read books of any length that fit the definition of R.I.P. literature.
  • Peril of the Short Story – Read short stories any time during the challenge.
  • Peril of the Real – Read any true tales of horror.
  • Peril of the Listen – Listen to RIP-related audiobooks, podcasts, and music.
  • Peril on the Screen – This is for those of us who like to watch suitably scary, eerie, mysterious, Gothic fare during this time of year. It may be something on the small screen or large.
  • Peril of the Group Read – During the month of October, there will be a group read of Shirley Jackson’s The Sundial.
  • Readers Imbibing Peril Bingo:

This year, I’ll be doing Peril of the Fiction, Peril of the Listen, Peril on the Screen, Peril of the Group Read, and trying to get a Bingo. I might also add in a bit of Peril of the Short Story if I decide to pick up one of the short story collections on my TBR. I’ve got a huge list of books on Goodreads for me to choose from for this event, the Something Wicked Fall challenge, the month-long FrightFall Readathon, and the 24-Hour Readathon happening in October.

Are you participating in #RIPXVI or reading any spooky reads over the next couple of months? Leave a comment!

Down the TBR Hole #90

How it works:

  • Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

My TBR pile dropped to 1099, thanks to finsihing several books during #BoutofBooks and this past week.  I also removed a few books from my wishlist that I was no longer interested in reading.

This week’s books:

The Beast is an Animal by Peternelle van Arsdale – GO.  I don’t remember where or when I got this book, or even why I bought it.  Perhaps it came in one of the subscription boxes I used to get.  Regardless, I’m not interested in reading it.

Anne of Ingleside, Rainbow Valley, and Rilla of Ingleside by L.M. Montgomery – KEEP.  I grouped these three together as one since they’re the remaining books in the “Anne of Green Gables” series, which I’ve been slowly re-reading over the past few years.  They will be moved into my permanent collection once I’ve finished them, along with the rest of the books in the series.

Arms from the Sea by Rich Shapero – GO.  I picked this one up for free at the Texas Book Festival so many years ago, back when I didn’t bother with reading the blurb to see if I even wanted to read it as long as it was a free book.  I’m glad I don’t do that anymore.  There’s no need to have books I never plan on reading on my shelves.

Borne by Jeff Vandermeer – KEEP. I didn’t love Annhilation, and didn’t bother getting the second book in the “Southern Reach” series for that reason, but I got this book in a book swap meetup before I had read Annhilation. Though I’m hesitant, I’m going to give this one the 50 page test.

The Metaphysics of Star Trek by Richard Hanley – KEEP.  I got this one for free from a friend who was getting rid of a bunch of books.  It’s a bit old, having been published in the late 90’s, but well after “Star Trek: The Next Generation” so I’m willing to see what the author has to say, if only for the reminisence of one of my all-time favorite Sci-Fi series.
My TBR pile is down a couple of books at 1096 books. The next few posts will be more of the physical books I own, and though I had predicted not getting rid of any of them in the last post, I’m now not so sure about that after getting rid of 2 books this week.  There just might be a few more that get tossed.

Currently Reading:

  • The Road to Serfdom by F.A. Hayek
  • Cannonbridge by Jonathan Barnes
  • The Cuckoo’s Cry by Caroline Overington

  • Solutions and Other Problems by Allie Brosh

  • The Stranger’s Magic by Max Frei

Challenges:

#ShelfLove – 33 of 51 books from my TBR.

Total pages read this week: 1056

Total books for the year: 52 of 90.

Last week was #BoutofBooks 32, and it was wonderful. The books I finished were all great for the most part, and I’m hoping that will continue once I’m done with Cannonbridge (which has been disappointing). The verdict is still out for The Cuckoo’s Cry, but it’s been good so far.

#BoutofBooks 32 – Day 7 & Wrap-Up

The Bout of Books readathon is organized by Amanda Shofner and Kelly Rubidoux Apple. It’s a weeklong readathon that begins at 12:01 am Monday, August 16th, and runs through Sunday, August 22nd in YOUR time zone. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are reading sprints, Twitter chats, and exclusive Instagram challenges, but they’re all completely optional. For all Bout of Books 32 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team

While I didn’t finish Cannonbridge by Jonathan Barnes, I only have about 65 pages left. I also did some #audiocleaning in my office while listening to some of The Cuckoo’s Cry by Caroline Overington.

Overall, this Bout of Books went better than the last. I got through more pages, read for a longer amount of time, and finished more books. I more than met my goal for this readathon, and I’m well on my way to catching up to my annual reading goal of 90 books. I’m looking forward to the next Bout of Books, in January, but until then, #RIP is right around the corner, and then another Dewey’s 24-Hour #Readathon in October.

#BoutofBooks 32 – Day 6

I hardly read anything at all yesterday; only a few pages of Cannonbridge by Jonathan Barnes before I went to bed. The Boyfriend and I spent a lot of time taking measurements and figuring out what furniture we want for our house now that the renovation is nearly done (at least what we’re doing for now). Then I spent more time on various websites looking at furniture, pricing everything, and making decisions on what to get now versus what to wait on for later. I’ll be glad when it’s all done and we can relax in our new home.

I don’t know if I’ll finish Cannonbridge today, but all I have to do is laundry, so I’m going to try.

I finished The Stranger’s Magic by Max Frei and started Cannonbridge by Jonathan Barnes, which means I’ve gone beyond my goal for this Bout of Books with 2 more days to go. I doubt I’ll finish Cannonbridge today, but I’m hoping to finish it before the end of the weekend.

For some reason, I couldn’t get into my blog’s dashboard yesterday to post my progress. I didn’t read nearly as much (121 pages) as the previous days or finish any books. The same goes for yesterday. I read a bit of The Stranger’s Magic by Max Frei, but I still have about 60 pages left. Instead of reading all evening, I went to a movie theater for the first time since before the pandemic to see “Black Widow.” Hopefully, I’ll finish The Stranger’s Magic today.
