Monday's Minutes

“Monday’s Minutes” is a weekly post in which I track my bookish life.  All book covers are linked to Goodreads unless otherwise noted.

Currently Reading:

  • The Once and Future King by T.H. White
  • The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
  • The Women in the Castle by Margaret Atwood
  • Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

Challenges:

Total pages read this week: 428

Total # of books for the year: 32 of 85.  My BFF will be moving to another state today.  We got to spend some time together on Saturday, but of course, it wasn’t enough.  The only book I’ve been interested in reading when I’m at home is Anne of Green Gables and I will probably go right into Anne of Avonlea when I’m done. This week is Bout of Books, so I probably won’t be doing much other than reading.

What are you reading this week?

Bout of Books 19

Bout of Books

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda Shofner and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, May 8th and runs through Sunday, May 14th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 19 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team

I have to work during this Bout of Books, unfortunately, but I’m planning on getting some extra reading time in with audiobooks.

My Goals

  • Read.  Read.  Read.
  • Finish the books I’m currently reading.
  • Finish at least one more book from my TBR.

Books to Read

One or two of these might already be finished by tomorrow.

  • Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
  • Anne of Avonlea by L.M. Montgomery
  • Anne of the Island by L.M. Montgomery
  • The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
  • The Women in the Castle by Jessica Shattuck
  • The Once and Future King by T.H. White

Updates

I will be posting an update each day with the amount of time I read, the number of pages read that day and the titles of any of the books I’ve finished.

#FitReaders Check-In

fitreaders-2017-1

  • This check-in is for April 28th – May 4th.
  • This has been such a crazy week that I almost forgot to do this check-in.  First I found out that my BFF is moving to another state on MONDAY!  Then all hell broke loose at work.  Then my cat, Dresden, got sick (it might be a food allergy).  Then some other personal stuff happened that I can’t get into on here.  Suffice it to say I’m glad it’s Friday.
  • I did not work out at all this week, but I did finally hit my mini-goal weight.  I haven’t seen that magic number on the scale in over 2 years, so I’m very proud of myself and ecstatic.  I’m also surprised considering this week’s stress eating.  At least it was Artic Zero ice cream instead of other more fattening foods.
  • If you have a FitBit, you can find me HERE.
  • Steps: 23,713/70,000
  • Miles: 9.73/35
  • Total Miles: 167.58/1779
  • Active Minutes: 103/210
  • Days I Drank 64 ounces of Water: 6/7
  • Virtual 5Ks: 0/10
  • Total Money Donated: $1.92/$30.00

  • Yes, Please by Amy Poehler
  • Due or Die by Jenn McKinlay
  • Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan

Challenges:

Total pages read this week: 1244

Total # of books for the year: 32 of 85.  This past Saturday was Dewey’s 24-Hour Readathon, and it was wonderful!  I spent Sunday recovering and catching up on things that I had let slide, but my post-readathon hangover wasn’t nearly as bad this time around as it’s been in the past.

I was planning to finish  The Handmaid’s Tale this week so I could start Bout of Books 19 with a fresh book, but last night I found out my BFF is moving to another state.  I went to my bookshelves for a comfort read, and my copy of Anne of Green Gables called out to me even more than The Hobbit.  I probably won’t be reading much else this week.

What are you reading this week?

  • Books Read: I haven’t finished either of the books I’m currently reading, Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan and Yes, Please by Amy Poehler, yet, but I’m only a couple chapters short of finishing the latter.
  • Mini-Challenges Completed: I only managed to do the survey at the beginning, but I’ve completed every hour except one of the Instagram Challenge.

Dewey's 24-Hour #Readathon – Read ALL the Books!

Dewey's Readathon_Pocketwatch_Bellezza
Dewey’s 24-Hour Readathon has officially started!  I prepped my tea kettle last night, so all I had to do when I got up at 6:30 am was turn it on, make my breakfast (yogurt and cranberry granola), and get my browser ready to go with all my readathon related sites.  I’ve been running off a readathon excitement high most of the week, especially when I found out that the four hours of mandatory overtime was canceled!!!

  • What fine part of the world are you reading from today? I’m in Austin, TX.
  • Which book in your stack are you looking forward to the most? The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear by Walter Moers.
  • Which snack are you looking forward to the most? Icecream!
  • Tell us a little something about yourself!  Here are 20 somethings about myself.  Also, I built a Hobbit hole in Minecraft this week instead of reading.
  • If you participated in the last readathon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today?  I’m going to try listening to audiobooks while I socialize so I can get as close to reading for 24 hours as possible.  I’m also raising money for charity, which I haven’t been able to do for the past few readathons.

Here’s my TBR:

  • How to Build a Girl by Caitlin Moran
  • Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan
  • Seraphina by Rachel Hartman
  • When Books Went to War by Molly Guptill Manning
  • Heart’s Blood by Juliet Marillier
  • Cannonbridge by Jonathon Barnes
  • Succubus Heat by Richelle Mead
  • The Stranger’s Magic by Max Frei
  • The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear by Walter Moers
  • Midnight Crossroad by Charlaine Harris
  • Wild by Cheryl Strayed

My first update will be at 3 pm.  I’ll be tracking how many pages I read and any books I finish, as well as the amount of money I’ve raised for RIF and the APL.  I’ll also include mini-challenges I’ve accepted, snacks I’ve nommed, and any musical earworms that have gotten into my head.
Whether you’re participating in the readathon or not, what book(s) are you currently reading?

Dewey's 24-Hour #Readathon

Dewey's Readathon_Pocketwatch_Bellezza
Dewey’s 24-Hour Readathon begins tomorrow, at 7 am CST, and I’m super excited!
I’m going to be doing a lot of socializing on Facebook, Goodreads, Twitter, and Litsy, but I’ll be listening to an audiobook while I’m at it.  Why?  I’ll be raising money for charity and I’m hoping to read for the entire 24 hours!  For every book I finish, I’ll be donating $5 to Reading is Fundamental and $5 to the Austin Public Library.  For every page I read from books that I don’t finish, I’ll donate 5 cents to RIF and 5 cents to the APL.
Since I’m also participating in the #ShelfLove reading challenge, all my books are off of my own bookshelves.  I’ll switch back and forth between books on the list as needed, but I am going to try to finish as many books as possible:

  • How to Build a Girl by Caitlin Moran
  • Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan
  • Seraphina by Rachel Hartman
  • When Books Went to War by Molly Guptill Manning
  • Heart’s Blood by Juliet Marillier
  • Cannonbridge by Jonathon Barnes
  • Succubus Heat by Richelle Mead
  • The Stranger’s Magic by Max Frei
  • The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear by Walter Moers
  • Midnight Crossroad by Charlaine Harris
  • Wild by Cheryl Strayed

Yes, my TBR list far more books that I could possibly finish in 24 hours, and it doesn’t include any of the audiobooks or ebooks that I might decide to listen to or read instead, but I want plenty of choices.
My updates will be every 8 hours after my kick-off post.  Along with the books I finish and the number of pages I read, I’ll include any mini-challenges I participate in, along with other tidbits such as music or snacks.
Speaking of snacks, this is a taste of what I brought home to keep my tummy happy during the readathon:

  • Popcorn
  • Icecream
  • Seaweed
  • Plums
  • Mandarin Oranges
  • Spinach Chips
  • Toasted Chickpeas
  • Frozen Grapes
  • Applesauce
  • Celery and Peanut Butter
  • Chocolate Mocha tea (it has whole coffee beans in it along with chocolate chips!)

I also got pizza and some other non-snack foods, but let’s face it, I mostly graze during readathons.
Are you participating in Dewey’s Readathon?  If so, what books do you have planned to read?  Leave a comment, and include your link if you have a “goals” post!
See you tomorrow morning! 🙂
