Building the Book Fort

“Building the Book Fort” is a weekly post where I track my bookish life.

Currently Reading:

  • The Final Trade by Joe Hart
  • Ready Player Two by Ernest Cline

Finished:

  • Something Rotten by Jasper Fforde
  • How to Invent Everything by Ryan North

Total pages read this week: 479

Total books for 2022: 52 of 85.

I finally finished How to Invent Everything late last night before I went to bed, and I have no idea which book from my TBR stack for #SciFiSummer I’ll pick up next. Whichever book I choose, it will probably be a shorter one, since it took me a month to finish How to Invent Everything.

#FitReaders Check-In

  • This check-in is for July 29th – August 4th
  • I had my appointment with a spine specialist this week, but of course, the VA didn’t send over my medical records like they were supposed to, so the specialist couldn’t do much for me beyond ordering new X-rays and doing a basic physical exam.
  • The X-rays turned up a couple more things wrong with my back, so I’ve gotten to the point where I’m fed up with the VA and their subpar medical care.  My plan is to get better health insurance through my job when open enrollment comes around next month and then start going to doctors outside of the VA, depending on what it is (basically anything beyond annual exams and vaccines).
  • On a brighter note, I signed up for the Summer Charity Challenge.  This Summer, we’re doing planks, and the minimum is 120 minutes.  My health coach gave me a link to a short plank workout, and it’s perfect for the challenge.  The spine specialist said planks were the ideal exercise to increase my core strength without hurting my back, and she was happy to hear that I’m doing the challenge.  I’ve added my time to the stats below.

This has been a very stressful week, and I’ve been too tired to read much. I’ve got less than two hours left of Something Rotten, according to Audible, so I’m hoping I’ll at least have that finished by the middle of the week at the latest.

#FitReaders Check-In

  • This check-in is for July 22nd – 28th
  • This was a rough, stressful week, especially at work, and working overtime didn’t help.  I’m relaxing this weekend, as much as I can, but I do have a couple of things to do in the backyard.  Hopefully destroying some weeds will be satisfying, especially while listening to an audiobook.

I feel like this was a slow reading week, even though I turned 308 pages. I didn’t finish any books, so maybe that’s why. It may also be partly because I’m struggling to get through How to Invent Everything. It’s interesting, but it’s definitely not action-packed. It’s more of a humorous history of civilization through our inventions. I’ve gotten about halfway through it, so hopefully, I’ll be able to finish it in a couple of weeks.

#FitReaders Check-In

  • This check-in is for July 15th – 21st.
  • I think I’m back to “normal.”  I’ve got energy, there are things I want to do, and I’m planning on combining those two elements to accomplish some stuff this weekend.  Hopefully, my mood, body, and the weather will all cooperate. *fingers crossed*

With six books finished for #SciFiSummer, I’ve achieved my goal of “Viper Pilot.” I will of course keep reading Science Fiction throughout the rest of the challenge, which doesn’t end until September 21st, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to finish the five books I would need to get “Jedi.”

Five books finished for #SciFiSummer! I’m only one book away from achieving my goal of “Viper Pilot.” I owe it all to a long weekend and then a week of being too sick to do anything else but read when I wasn’t sleeping.

#FitReaders Check-In

  • This check-in is for July 1st – 7th.
  • What was supposed to be a weekend that was as relaxing and low-key as possible turned into me taking care of the boyfriend who got really sick, dealing with the neighbors’ fireworks until after 2 am every night, and then getting really sick myself.
  • I finally was back to normal enough to go to work yesterday, but other than that, I have been in bed, eating soup and crackers, and drinking 7UP and watered-down Gatorade.
