Down the TBR Hole #54

Image: hjl

Down the TBR Hole was started by Lia over at Lost in a Story.  All book covers are linked to Goodreads unless otherwise noted.

How it works:

  • Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

I will be repeating this process until I’ve filtered out my entire TBR.

I know I usually post these on Saturdays, but I’ve been so busy this past week with work that I wanted a day away from computers and went out to spend time enjoying a rare (for this week) non-rainy day. Thanks to Bout of Books, my TBR pile is down to 681 books.

This week’s books:

The Three Day Runaway by Katarina Green – KEEP.  Though I think $100 a day seems like a bit much for most long-weekend trips, I’m interested in all of the tips and strategies for saving money on my adventuring.

Aerisia: Land Beyond the Sunset by Sarah Ashwood – GO. The synopsis made this book out to be really generic sounding with a predictable plot.

Dragon Time and Other Stories by Ruth Nestvold – GO.  The synopsis has me confused about the sub-genre of this short story collection.  It comes off as a mix of Fantasy and Romance, but I’m really not sure.  Maybe I’m feeling picky today, but I really don’t care to find out.

The Sword of Light by E.J. Gilmour – GO.  Another extremely generic Epic Fantasy with a male main character.  I’m just not interested.

Forsaken by Kristen Day – KEEP.  The synopsis made this book sound so good until it got to the romance part.  Still, I want to give this one a chance, especially after ditching the 3 previous books on my TBR.

My to-read shelf is down to 678 books. Next weekend is the 24 in 48 Readathon, so I’ll be taking another week off from “Down the TBR Hole”.

#FitReaders Check-In

  • This check-in is for January 11th – 17th.
  • I’ve had another week of not doing much thanks to all the rain and high winds.
  • That being said, I have been on my feet a lot for my job, and working a few extra hours.  I’m also trying to do as much of my work standing as I can, but I don’t have a standing desk.  Until I get one, I’m trying to get up and walk around more when I need a break.

Currently Reading:

  • The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
  • Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik
  • Hygge: The Danish Art of Happiness by Britta Olsson

Total pages read this week: 473
Total books for the year: 3 of 50.  This week was Bout of Books, and I love starting off the new year with this challenge/readathon.  I always feel like I’m getting a head start on my reading goals, and right now I’m 2 books ahead of schedule.  I also love taking the time near the beginning of the year to put everything else aside and relax for a bit.  It’s a nice reminder that not everything has to get done Right Now.
What are you reading this week?

#BoutofBooks 24 – Day 7 and Wrap-Up

Bout of Books
The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda Shofner and Kelly Rubidoux Apple. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, January 7th and runs through Sunday, January 13th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 24 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team
I had the apartment to myself (plus the cat) for most of the day.  I napped, I did the laundry and the dishes, and I also read a decent chunk of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson.
  • Time Read:  4 hours 32 minutes
  • Pages Read: 167
  • Books Finished: 0
  • Total Number of Books Read: 3

Even though I didn’t stick to my TBR, I did meet all of my goals this time around.  Compared to the last Bout of Books, I did really well. I’m looking forward to Bout of Books 25 in May!

Between napping and interruptions from the Boyfriend, I managed to finish If On a Winter’s Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino. I also read a few pages of Hygge by Britta Olsson and I started The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson.  I was a bit irritated by If On a Winter’s Night a Traveler, so I wanted something I had been wanting to read for awhile.

Even though it was Friday, I went to work early and ended up staying a little late to finish up some things.  By the time I got home and got settled on the couch to read, the Boyfriend was coming home and it is our daily routine to discuss our day and relax together for a bit. I read a little bit more of If On a Winter’s Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino after he decided he wanted to go to bed early, but I found my eyes getting droopy after a couple of chapters.

#FitReaders Check-In

  • This check-in is for January 4th – 10th.
  • It’s been a bit of a rough week for me.  I ended up getting sick AGAIN! It has also been rainy and cold outside, I haven’t been sleeping well, and all of that has added up to me not doing much of anything.
  • I’m feeling much better today, so hopefully my next check-in will be full of activity!
