“Life happens when you’re busy making plans” is the story of my life lately. I’ve had to overhaul my budget to help my daughter as much as possible without hurting my financial situation and I found out from my boyfriend that we might be moving back to Texas early next year, much sooner than we had originally planned. What does this mean for my bookish life? I won’t be buying hardly any new books in any format for the foreseeable future. I’ll also shift my focus from reading my ebooks to culling and reading my physical TBR. Thankfully, Dewey’s 24-Hour #Readathon is next weekend.

With all of the family drama, me recovering from having my wisdom teeth removed (the antibiotics did a serious number on me), and my boyfriend going on another trip, I retreated from the real world as much as possible and immersed myself in all things Harry Potter. I watched all the movies, listened to Wrock music, and started the books again. I also played “Hogwarts Legacy,” and will continue to play it this weekend since I’m nearly done with the game.

Life has been turned upside down a bit this past week after getting a call from my daughter that her fiance walked out on her and their kids. This was on the same day my boyfriend was getting ready to fly out on a business trip and then get back in time to take me to get my wisdom teeth removed yesterday. It would be an understatement to say that reading hasn’t been much of a priority. The good news is that everyone is safe and healthy, and I’m healing nicely so far with very little pain. I’m hoping to get some reading in this weekend as a bit of self-care.

Everything is slowly getting back to normal for me. I don’t know how long it will last, but the relief is almost euphoric. I’m ecstatically grateful for the “not bad” days I had this week and hopeful I will have more.

While I’m still not reading much, I’m turning towards books that are in some way comforting and shifting away from the books I’ve been reading to improve myself. This strategy doesn’t always work out (which leads to DNFs), but I think it’s helping a little.

I’m in the middle of a reading slump. Not only am I not enjoying what I’m reading, I’ve been listening to music in the car instead of audiobooks. I’ve also been choosing the TV over books more than usual. These are both sure signs, along with others, that I’m depressed, which I already knew, but now it’s glaringly obvious.

Maybe it’s because I’ve been decluttering a lot lately, but I seem to be having a much easier time getting rid of books I know I’ll never read than reading the books I have. Maybe it’s the books I’m trying to read. Maybe it’s because I’m mildly depressed and don’t have a lot of energy right now. Regardless of the reason, I’m in the middle (or nearly so) of 7 books.

I’m reading a lot more but not finishing any books yet. I have been deciding to let go of a lot of books, though, which is the only reason my TBR mountain is getting any smaller. My decluttering has slowed down significantly; probably because I’ve gotten to the hard part – paperwork. I have so much of it, but getting rid of what I don’t need to keep will not create much space and it’s just not any fun, especially when I deal with so much paperwork at my job. While my plan for this weekend is to declutter my craft and hobby stuff, I know it’s just me procrastinating on going through, organizing, and probably digitizing what I need to keep after shredding what I don’t.

I’m still struggling with my mood, but it’s gotten a bit better thanks to me finally telling myself to sit down and spend some time with a book, any book, as long as I take the time to do nothing else but read for a while. I can declutter later. The stuff will still be there. Sometimes self-care is not doing the work, at least for a couple of hours.
