Monday's Minutes

“Monday’s Minutes” is a weekly post in which I track my bookish life.  All book covers are linked to Goodreads unless otherwise noted.
Currently Reading:

  • Read it and Weep by Jenn McKinlay
  • The Perfection Detox by Petra Kolber
  • ‘Salem’s Lot by Stephen King

Finished:

  • Roald Dahl’s Book of Ghost Stories
  • The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson

Challenges:

  • RIP: Peril the First – 3 of 4; Peril of the Short Story – 13; Peril on the Screen – 15

Total pages read this week: 681
Total books for the year: 79 of 90.   The Boyfriend and I finished the 1st season of “American Horror Story.”  We also watched “Coraline” this weekend since he had never seen it.  I decided to start watching “Supernatural” again, but I won’t be getting through too many episodes before Halloween since I only watch it when the Boyfriend isn’t home.  This week, I’ll be putting together my #Readathon stack, and I’m hoping to finish ‘Salem’s Lot so I can focus on shorter books.

Down the TBR Hole #42

Image: hjl

Down the TBR Hole was started by Lia over at Lost in a Story.  All book covers are linked to Goodreads unless otherwise noted.

How it works:

  • Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

I will be repeating this process until I’ve filtered out my entire TBR.

My TBR pile is still sitting at 706 books.  Even though I finished a couple of books, I also added a couple.

This week’s books:

Girl Defective by Simmone Howell – KEEP.  The synopsis starts with “In the tradition of High Fidelity and Empire Records…”  There is no way I’m not reading this book.

Time and Again by Jack Finney- KEEP.  This story involves time travel and a romance.  If it is in any way comparable to Outlander, I’ll take it.

The Old Brown Suitcase by Lillian Boraks-Nemetz – KEEP.  This is the story of a young girl who lived in the Warsaw Ghetto and then immigrated to Canada.  I’m a little obsessed with books about WWII.

Imaginary Boy by Mark Eldrich – GO.  I don’t know why, but I’m no longer interested in reading this book. *Shrug*

The Song of the Quarkbeast by Jasper Fforde – GO.  I’m only removing this book because I haven’t read the first book in the series yet.  I’ll probably add it back to my TBR after I finish The Last Dragonslayer.

My to-read shelf is down to 704 books.  Since I just started ‘Salem’s Lot by Stephen King,  that number isn’t likely to go down by next Saturday.  However, next weekend is the Dewey’s 24-Hour #Readathon!  There won’t be a “Down the TBR Hole” post until the weekend after that, and I’m hoping I’ll be down to 700 books by then.

#FitReaders Check-In

  • This check-in is for October 5th – 11th.
  • I didn’t mention this in previous posts because it wasn’t a big deal at the time, but I have to get an EKG soon.  My Doctor was able to rule out the usual causes of my intermittent feeling of being lightheaded (anemia, high/low blood pressure, etc.).  Until we figure out what the issue is, I’m taking it easy when it comes to exercise.
  • If you have a FitBit, you can find me HERE.
  • Workouts: 3/6
  • Steps: 47,290/50,000
  • Miles: 19.72
  • Total Miles: 610.41

Total books for the year: 77 of 90.  The Boyfriend and I started watching “American Horror Story.” The first couple of episodes were really weird and we weren’t sure if we wanted to continue, but we also really wanted to find out what was going on!  I also spent most of the weekend reading Roald Dahl’s Book of Ghost Stories.  Though none of them have scared me, they are delightfully creepy.

I will be repeating this process until I’ve filtered out my entire TBR.

My TBR pile is up to 706 books.  I added a couple to my wish list.

This week’s books:

The End is Nigh, The End is Now, The End Has Come ed. by John Joseph Adams – KEEP.  These 3 books will remain on my wish list because I will buy all of them at the same time or not at all.  They are a set of short story anthologies with the 1st one being pre-apocalyptic, the 2nd being apocalyptic, and the 3rd post-apocalyptic.  I don’t know if anyone else has ever attempted this before, but I don’t care; I need them in my life.

The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell- KEEPSlade House was so creepy-good that I HAVE to read this one at some point.

Badge, Book, and Candle by Max Gladstone – KEEP.  This is episode 1 of the “Book Burners” serial.  After I got sucked into my first serial, “The World Devoured”, and then it disappeared after 2 episodes, I was hesitant to add this one to my TBR.  However, it has 16 episodes in season 1, 13 in season 2, 13 in season 3, and a complete 4th season was published in August.  I think it’s safe to say that it’s popular.

This Monstrous Thing by Mackenzi Lee – KEEP.  This story is supposed to be a combination of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Steampunk.  It will either be horrible or awesome, and I need to find out.

Pet Sematary by Stephen King – KEEP.  This is one of the few King novels I’ve never read, and, trust me, I will correct that.

My to-read shelf is still at 706 books.  I know that’s because it’s October and these books were added during the same month back in 2015.  I tend to add books to my TBR and/or wish list seasonally and my sub-pile of Horror has been growing exponentially for some time thanks to October only being one month.  How am I supposed to catch up on all those wonderfully scary, creepy books in 31 days?!

Total pages read this week: 289
Total books for the year: 75 of 90. I only have a month left to finish 4 books and at least 1 short story for RIP XIII.  At the rate that I’ve been reading, I’m a little worried about that.   I forgot to mention in last week’s “Monday’s Minutes” that I watched a movie for Peril on the Screen.  There was a watch along of “Hereditary” for Something Wicked This Fall Comes, and I watched it with the Boyfriend.  The ending was bizarre and unexpected, but there were several moments in which I was totally freaked out!
