Since it’s Banned Books Week, all of this “Thursday’s Things” are related to banned books. I’ve also updated the Banned Books page to remove broken links so check it out for even more information about banned books. Sometime during this month, I’ll do a second “Thursday’s Things” in celebration of all things Halloween.
- Banned Books Infographic – This infographic is supposed to be up to the present, but the last book listed was banned in 2003. Regardless, it’s still interesting and informative on the history of book banning.
- 311 Reasons to Celebrate Banned Books Week – This isn’t a list, but an article about the fact that 311 books have been challenged in the past year. This article from ALA News lists the top ten.
- 100 most frequently challenged books by decade
- Banned Books Lists – Goodreads’ “Listopia” has a whole page of lists featuring banned books.
- Neil Gaiman: ‘my parents didn’t have any kind of rules about what I couldn’t read’ – This is a great interview that Neil Gaiman did for the Guardian about censorship.
- Banned and/or Challenged Books from the Radcliffe Publishing Course Top 100 Novels of the 20th Century – This list includes information on specific challenges, bannings, and court cases. Did you know that a church burned copies of the Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien because they believed them to be Satanic?!
- Forbidden Comics Bundle – Humble Bundle has a bundle of banned and challenged comics that is available for 5 more days. If you’re into comics, grab this pay-what-you-want bundle before it’s gone and help out the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund at the same time!
- Google Maps Banned Books Locations (2007 – 2011) – A little outdated, but still interesting to see all the locations where books have been banned.
- Rising to the Challenge: How The Book Internet Delivered Books to Teens – I’ve never read Some Girls Are by Courtney Summers, but this article on Book Riot caused me some feels.
- How does censorship affect a writer’s career? – Most of the time we only discuss banned books in terms of how it affects readers, but this article looks at how banning books affect authors.
- 75 Banned Science Fiction and Fantasy Books – Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams?! I don’t even.
