Down the TBR Hole #113

How it works:

  • Go to your Goodreads want-to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

My shelf is still holding steady at 1129.  I finished a couple of books but also added a couple of books.
This week’s books:

Rosemary’s Baby by Ira Levin – KEEP.  I have no idea if I’m going to like this book, but it’s a classic Horror novel and I feel like I must at least give it a chance.

Dark Harvest by Norman Partridge – KEEP.  I tried to start this during last year’s 24-Hour Readathon, but I couldn’t get into it.  I’m not sure if it was because I was tired or if it was the story, so I’m going to try again this year during #RIP, but not during the readathon.

Suspicious Minds by Gwenda Bond- KEEP.  I’m a huge “Stranger Things” fan, and I know the show isn’t going to last forever, but at least there’s this book along with five others.

The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud – KEEP.  Another book blogger recommended this several years ago, and it was available to check out through Prime Reading on Amazon.  It’s been sitting in my Kindle library ever since, mostly because it’s a fairly long book (nearly 500 pages).  Maybe I’ll finally read it sometime this year or next, now that my annual reading goal is more relaxed.

Sparrow Hill Road by Seanan McGuire – KEEP.  I really enjoyed Rosemary and Rue, the first book in the “October Daye” series, and I bought a couple of the author’s other books along with this one, mostly because I love the titles (is it weird to buy a book based on the title?).
My want-to-read shelf remains at 1129 books. The next post will be a hodgepodge of books from different genres.

My shelf is down two books to 1129.  I read a couple of books, DNF’d another book, removed a couple of books from my wish list after realizing I didn’t want to read them, and added another book to my wish list.
This week’s books:

The Perfection Detox by Petra Kolber – KEEP.  I completed one of Kolber’s workshops during the pandemic, and that inspired me to buy the book, but it’s sat on my shelves ever since.  I don’t know why, but I tend to do that with Self-Help books.  I’ll get around to reading this one at some point, though I have no idea when.

Exploring J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit by Corey Olsen – KEEP.  I love all things having to do with Hobbits.

Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist- KEEP.  This one is a Swedish vampire story, and it sounds like it will be very interesting and perfect for the Readers Imbibing Peril challenge.

Among the Shadows by L.M. Montgomery – KEEP.  I remember reading and loving this when I was a kid.  When I found it online through a used bookstore, I immediately bought it.

NOS4A2 by Joe Hill – KEEP.  I enjoyed Heart-Shaped Box, and I have several other books of Hill’s that I’ve bought because they sound like they’re right up my Horror alley.  This is one of them, and the only reason I haven’t read it yet is because I can’t decide if I should read it during #RIP or during the Christmas season.
My want-to-read shelf is holding steady at 1129 books. The next post will be mostly books I already own that are #RIP worthy.

My shelf is down one book to 1131.  Even though I finished 3 books, I bought an ebook and an audiobook.
This week’s books:

Blackout and All Clear by Connie Willis – KEEP.  These books are a part of the “Oxford Time Travel” series.  I read and loved the first 2 books, Doomsday Book and To Say Nothing of the Dog.

The Glorius Cause by Robert Middlekauff – KEEP.  I got this book around the same time the Boyfriend and I were watching “Turn” (based on the book Washington’s Spies by Alexander Rose).  While I studied the American Revolution at various points in school, this book is much more comprehensive than what was covered in class.

Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier – KEEP.  I love Dinosaurs and everything involving or about Dinosaurs, so there is no way I would pass on a book about Mary Anning, the fossil hunter who discovered the Ichthyosaur.

The Bar Harbor Retirement Home for Famous Writers by Terri-Lynne DeFino – KEEP. After reading the synopsis, I’m skeptical about whether or not I will like this book, but I’m willing to give it the 50-page test, mostly because I already own the book.  I would probably ditch it if it were still on my wishlist.

Circe by Madeline Miller – KEEP.  Though from an entirely different mythology, I think this story will be similar to The Witch’s Heart by Genevieve Gornichec, which I greatly enjoyed reading.
My want-to-read shelf is holding steady at 1131 books. The next post will be mostly physical books I already own and I *might* be getting rid of at least one of them.

My shelf is up one book to 1133.  Even though I finished 3 books, I bought some ebooks and an audiobook.
This week’s books:

Deerskin by Robin McKinley – GO.  I’ve heard that this is an extremely dark story, and I’m not sure I want to read it after reading the synopsis.

Dragonhaven by Robin McKinley – KEEP.  The synopsis sounds like this book will be amazing, and now I’m very much looking forward to reading it!

The Library at Night by Alberto Manguel – KEEP.  This sounds like it’s in my wheelhouse, but the other two books of Manguel’s that I’ve read were only 3 stars, and I was being generous.  Maybe this one will be better.

Dead Man’s Deal by Jocelynn Drake – KEEP. This is the sequel to Angel’s Ink, which I really enjoyed.

Washington’s Spies by Alexander Rose – KEEP.  The Boyfriend and I loved “Turn”, the show based on this book, and I’m planning to read this over the July 4th weekend.
My want-to-read shelf is down one book to 1132. The next post will be all physical books I already own and I highly doubt I’ll be getting rid of any of them.

My shelf is up one book to 1131.  I got this month’s Nightmares from Nowhere bookclub book.
This week’s books:

Sarah’s Quilt and The Star Garden by Nancy E. Turner – KEEP.  I absolutely loved These Is My Words and I really need to read the sequel, which has been sitting on my bookshelf for far too long.

State of Wonder by Ann Patchett – GO.  I don’t know why I have this book, but I think I picked it up from a Little Free Library near my apartment when I lived in California.  I’ll find one near where I live now so that someone who wants to read it can have it.

Murder in the Mystery Suite by Ellery Adams – KEEP.  I have the audiobook, and I’ve enjoyed Adam’s other series, “Secret, Book, and Scone Society” so far.

Abarat: Absolute Midnight by Clive Barker – KEEP. This is the last book in the “Abarat” series, and I’m planning on reading it during RIP this year.

A War in Crimson Embers by Alex Marshall – KEEP.  The first book of “The Crimson Empire” series, A Crown for Cold Silver was awesome, and I have the 2nd book, A Blade of Black Steel.  The only problem is that each book is around 600 pages long, and I tend to put them aside for shorter books.
My want-to-read shelf is back down to 1130 books. The next post will be mostly physical books I already own and, at first glance, they all look like keepers.

My shelf is down one book to 1131.  I finished a book this week.
This week’s books:

The Rain Watcher by Tatiana De Rosnay – KEEP.  I don’t remember where I got this book, but the story is set in Paris, and I’m pretty sure I read a review from one of the many blogs I used to read during that time and decided it was for me.  I still think that, so I have no problem with keeping it.

We Are All Completely Fine by Daryl Gregory – KEEP.  This sounds like it will be just as awesome as Spoonbenders.

Kill the Farm Boy by Delilah S. Dawson and Kevin Hearne – KEEP.  I tend to love comical Fantasy stories, and they usually end up on my list of all-time favorites.  They’re fun, light, and don’t take themselves too seriously.  I’m looking forward to reading this one, especially since it’s the first in a series.

The Radium Girls by Kate Moore – GO. This is one of those books that is probably really good, but I only got it because I felt I *should* read it, and that is never a good thing for me when it comes to books, especially if it’s a sad Non-Fiction story.

Willa of the Wood by Robert Beatty – KEEP.  I loved Beatty’s “Serafina” series, so I immediately bought this when it came out.  Now that I’ve finished the “Serafina” series, I will probably start this one sooner rather than later.
My want-to-read shelf is down one more book to 1130 books. The next post will be a mix of physical, audio, and ebooks I already own, along with a book that has been on my wishlist for quite some time.

My shelf is down a few books to 1132.  I finished a couple of books, bought a few ebooks, and then removed a few from my wishlist that I no longer want to read.
This week’s books:

Farmer Giles of Ham by J.R.R. Tolkien – KEEP.  I haven’t read much of Tolkien’s other books, and I would like to change that.

The Gormenghast Novels by Mervyn Peake – KEEP.  I got these 3 books after reading a review many years ago.

The Return of the Shadow, The Treason of Isengard, and The War of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien – KEEP.  These books are part of the “History of Middle Earth” and “History of The Lord of the Rings” series edited by Christopher Tolkien.  During the pandemic, I signed up for an online college course through Signum University called “The Story of The Hobbit,” and some of the coursework involves reading parts of the series.

Almost Midnight by Rainbow Rowell – KEEP. I’ve greatly enjoyed Rowell’s other books, and this one is fairly short and contains two of her previously published short stories.

Unbound, Imprinted, and Revisionary by Jim C. Hines – KEEP.  I love the “Magic Ex Libris” series so far, and I’m looking forward to when I finally pick the third book up.  It’s been a couple of years since I finished the 2nd book.  Books 4 and 4.5 are still on my wishlist because I only buy the books in a series one at a time as I finish them.
My want-to-read shelf is holding steady at 1132 books. The next post will be mostly ebooks I already own, and I’m not sure what I will decide to keep.

My shelf is down a couple of books to 1136.  I finished a couple of audiobooks.
This week’s books:

The Tethered Mage by Melissa Caruso – KEEP.  I have no idea when or where I got this ebook, and I’m not even sure if it was a freebie or if I bought it based on a recommendation or review.  I’ll give it the 50-page test.

Big Damn Hero by Nancy Holder, The Magnificent Nine by James Lovegrove, and Generations by Tim Lebbon – KEEP.  “Firefly” is one of my all-time favorite TV shows, and there is no way that I’ll get rid of these books.

The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom – GO.  While I’m sure this is an amazing story, the synopsis makes it seem like it is very heavy on religion, and I’m just not interested.

The Wisdom of Wolves by Jim and Jamie Dutcher – KEEP. The authors literally lived along side a pack of wolves for several years.  There’s no way I’m not going to read this at some point.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber – KEEP.  The synopsis reminds me a little of The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, though the plots don’t seem similar at all.  I’m willing to give it a try.
My want-to-read shelf is down to 1135 books. The next post will be full of physical books I already own, and I know without a doubt that (with the exception of one book), I won’t be getting rid of them.

My shelf is down several books to 1138.  I finished 5 books during the readathon on Saturday.
This week’s books:

The Slow Regard of Silent Things by Patrick Rothfuss – KEEP.  I’ve been putting off reading this because there is still no sign of when the 3rd book in the “King Killer Chronicle” series will be published.

Terminal Alliance by Jim C. Hines – KEEP.  I love the “Magic Ex Libris” series, and this book, the first book in the “Janitors of the Post-Apocolypse” series sounds like it will be just as fun.

A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway – KEEP.  This is all about the Ex-pat Writer’s experience in Paris during the 1920s, and I’m very interested in reading it.

Veins of Gold by Charlie N. Holmberg – KEEP. There isn’t a single book yet by Holmberg that I haven’t enjoyed.

Smoke and Summons by Charlie N. Holmberg – KEEP.  See above.  I haven’t read this one yet mostly because it’s the first in a trilogy, and I want to finish the “Paper Magician” series first.
My want-to-read shelf is holding steady at 1138 books. The next post will be mostly physical books I own and I highly doubt that I’ll be getting rid of any of them.

My shelf is up again to 1144.  I finished a book, but I added a couple more to my wishlist.
This week’s books:

The League of Beastly Dreadfuls by Holly Grant – KEEP.  I love darker Middle-Grade Fantasy.

The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins – KEEP.  I think I started this book several years ago, but never finished it.  I probably got distracted by other books.  I will attempt to read this one again at some point.

A College of Magics by Caroline Stevermer – KEEP.  I’m a little skeptical of this one, despite my love of Middle-Grade Fantasy, because the character and place names seem ridiculous and like the author is trying too hard to be original.  I’m willing to give it a chance, though.

Kat, Incorrigible by Stephanie Burgis – KEEP. This one looks too cute to not be worth keeping.

The Man Who Laughs by Victor Hugo – GO.  The synopsis sounds far too depressing for this book to remain on my wishlist.
My want-to-read shelf is back down to 1143 books. The next post will be mostly ebooks I own and I don’t have a clue from first glance if I’ll want to keep them or not.
