Monday’s Minutes #1

Currently Reading: Tommy Black and the Staff of Light by Jake Kerr, a review book, and The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell, which I’m reading for the Sword and Laser bookclub.

FinishedThe Sunken by S.C. Green, which I’ll be reviewing sometime this week, and Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott, which I’ll be reviewing later today.

Winter 2014-2015 COYER Progress:  I’ve read 2 book towards my goal of 10, and participated in 1 read-a-thon towards my goal of 3.  I’ve also participated in some socializing on Facebook, but I need to check out some reviews and do a mini-challenge.

Show Your Shelves Some Love, Outdo Yourself, and Netgalley/Edelweiss Progress: Since the books I’ve finished this week were started before Jan. 1st, I haven’t made any progress towards these challenges yet.

Total pages read for the week: 722

Total number of books for the year: 2.  Since I celebrated my Birthday this week, I got a lot more reading done than I thought I would.  However, the COYER New Year’s Read-a-Thon was a bit of a flail for me.  I didn’t finish a single book for it.  I’m going to try to make up for that by getting in as much reading time as possible for Bout of Books 12.

Top Commenter: Every week I’ll be posting the top commenter.  For this week, my Top Commenter was Shaina from Shaina Reads.

Winter 2014-2015 COYER Progress:  I’ve read 1 book towards my goal of 10, but in trying to get as much reading time in as possible and also celebrating Christmas, I haven’t kept up with my “social” goals.

Total pages read for the week: 873

Total number of books for the year: 64.  I got a lot more reading done than I thought I would.  I’ve made a lot of progress with getting caught up on my review books. I pushed one back to January, but with some luck and lots of reading time over the next couple of days, I shouldn’t have to push anymore back.  I’m also determined to finish 65 books this year, so I’m going to try to finish either The Sunken or Ivanhoe before the 1st.

What I’m Reading Monday #17

Currently Reading: The Broken Sword by Poul Anderson and We Are the Birds of the Coming Storm by Lola Lafon, both review books, and Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott, for the read-along.

FinishedVillette by Charlotte Brontë which I reviewed on Saturday, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon, and Soldier of Blood and Fortune by Emma J.R. Hawk, the 2nd book in what was supposed to be a serial.  I was told by the publisher back when I agreed to review Justice in a Dead Land that each new part would be published every Monday (this is also stated on the book description on Amazon).  It’s been two months since Soldier of Blood and Fortune was published, so I’m a bit irritated at having wasted my money.

Total pages read for the week: 962

Total number of books for the year: 61 (I don’t count Soldier of Blood and Fortune as a book).  It feels so good to finish the books that I’ve struggled to finish for months!  I’m not quite caught up on my review books yet, so I may end up having to push one or two of them back to January, but I’m hoping to catch up after this week so that it only affects those books.

DNF: Elora of Stone by Jaime Lee Mann, which I wrote a DNF review for on Saturday.

Elora

Total pages read for the week: 399

Total number of books for the year: 59.  This week was much better than the last couple of weeks as far as how many pages I managed to read.  However, I ended up sleeping for most of Thursday instead of reading, and I had a whole list of things to get done on Friday before I went to a Christmas party that evening.  I then spent most of Saturday with my Best Friend.  So overall, I didn’t spend as much time reading as I thought I would.  I regret nothing though.  I really needed the sleep after Finals, I had a great time at the party, and my Best Friend is far more important to me than my page count for the week.  There’s also the added bonuses of having this whole week to spend reading, because I completed my to-do list, and I can stay up reading as long as I want and get up when I want because I don’t have any classes.  I’m going to treat the time as my personal readathon and see how many books I can finish and get reviewed before I head out to spend Christmas with the boyfriend’s family.  I would love to finish off all of my current reads before the end of the year.

Total number of books for the year: 57.  It was another week in which I wasn’t able to get much reading done.  This time, it’s due to studying for Finals, spending time with friends that I won’t see again until next semester, getting a kitten, and the boyfriend and I kitty-proofing our apartment.  So, after I get through the Finals I have today and Wednesday, I’m hoping to get a lot more reading done.  I’ve already had to push back a couple of my reviews, and I really want to get caught up on those as well as finish my current reads before the end of the year.

Total pages read for the week: 117

Total number of books for the year: 57.  Ivanhoe brought me out of my reading slump, but I wasn’t able to get much reading done due to the two Thanksgiving dinners I attended with the boyfriend’s family and also the head cold that hit me like an anvil as if I were Wile E. Coyote.  There are much worse illnesses to have, but I hate head colds the most because they make my brain slow and all I want to do is sleep, drink tea with honey, and eat soup.  I’m considerably better now, after I got back home and slept the rest of the weekend away, so I’m hoping to get a lot more reading done this week.

Paper   Scrapplings

Total pages read for the week: 615

Total number of books for the year: 57.  I’ve hit a weird reading slump.  It’s weird because it’s not the kind of reading slump in which I’m not reading, but one in which I don’t want to read.  I’m not sure why.   It might be because I feel like I’m either coming down with a cold or my allergies are getting worse.  However, it might be because Scrapplings was such a disappointment, Cold Hillside, while really good, has a slower pace, Villette is still a struggle to make any progress with, and I miss the fast pace of The Paper Magician.  Actually, I miss everything about The Paper Magician.

What are you reading this week?  Have you ever had the kind of reading slump I’m talking about?  If so, what did you do, or what book brought you out of it?

What I’m Reading Monday #12

Finished: The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, which I’ll be reviewing sometime this week, and Ennara and the Fallen Druid by Angela Myron, which I reviewed yesterday.

Total pages read for the week: 513

Total number of books for the year: 55.  I’m still struggling to finish Villette.  My review books for this month are much more interesting, and November is already half-way over.  Besides The Paper Magician, I’ve got 2 more to finish, and I don’t want to push their reviews back, especially since I decided to participate in The Classics Club Spin #8 by hosting a read-along.

What I’m Reading Monday #11

Currently Reading:  The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, which I’m savoring by only reading a little bit at a time, Villette by Charlotte Brontë, which I’m reading for The Classics Club, Ennara and the Fallen Druid by Angela Myron, a review book, and The Hobbit and Philosophy, what I’m reading for fun.

Finished: Tears of a Heart by Chase Blackwood, which I’ll be reviewing sometime this week.

Total pages read for the week: 575

Total number of books for the year: 53.  I’m still concentrating on finishing the books I started in September or October, as well as reading the review books I’ve got lined up for this month.  Though I’m not going to be participating in any read-alongs, read-a-thons, or challenges this month, I decided to participate in The Classics Club Spin #8, which I’ll be posting more about tomorrow.  Depending on which book I’ll be reading, I might put off starting it till December and host a read-along for it.

What I’m Reading Monday #10

Currently Reading:  The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, which I wasn’t able to finish before Halloween, and Villette by Charlotte Brontë, which I’m picking back up now that all the Halloween activities are done, Tears of a Heart by Chase Blackwood, a review book, and The Hobbit and Philosophy, another book I’m returning to.

Finished: The Nightingale Bones by Ariel Swan, which I reviewed, and Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury.

Total pages read for the week: 482

Total number of books for the year: 52.  It’s such a relief to have surpassed my goal for the year.  Now I’m concentrating on finishing books I had started as well as reading the review books I’ve got lined up for this month.  I’m not going to be participating in any read-alongs, read-a-thons, or challenges this month, since the holidays are just around the corner, and I’ve got Finals in December.  I need to relax, and I want to get back to a consistent schedule while I can.  That means Thursday’s Quotables will be every week (except on Thanksgiving), instead of being cancelled due to other posts.  I have a few ideas for new features, but I’m going to wait until at least mid-December before I start those.
