Monday’s Minutes #44

“Monday’s Minutes” is a weekly post in which I track my bookish life.  All book covers are linked to Goodreads unless otherwise noted.

  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling – for the HP re-read.
  • The Witching Hour by Anne Rice
  • Thirteen Days in September by Lawrence Wright – for my History of US Foreign Policy class.

Finished:

  • The Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury
  • Coraline by Neil Gaiman
  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling

I’ll try to get a review posted at some point for Coraline.

Total # of books for the year: 78.  I wrote a guest post for Michelle @ Because Reading about vampires and Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice.  Why does Halloween have to be over?! I got swamped in research and writing a paper, so I didn’t get around to reviewing some of the books I wanted to before the end of October.  Sometimes I wish the spookiness could continue for another month.  Now that it’s November, I’ll be reading books that are still dark though less designed to frighten.  In addition to finishing The Witching Hour, I’ll hopefully have time to get to A Tale Dark and Grimm by Adam Gidwitz, Hyde by Daniel Levine, and Gretel and the Case of the Missing Frog Prints by P.J. Brackston.  All of them are library books, and I’d like to finish them before they’re due.

Total # of books for the year: 75.  Halloween approaches!  The Boyfriend and I have been watching “Penny Dreadful” and we have plans to finish the 2nd season before Halloween so we can spend the night watching “Hocus Pocus” and other favorites while drinking red wine and eating garlic cheese bombs, popcorn, candy corn, and chocolate frosted pumpkin muffins.  I’ve already got my books picked out for November, but I will be reading them purely for enjoyment whenever I have time outside of schoolwork and job hunting.  Even though I’ve been posting something nearly every day, I already feel like a weight has been lifted.  We’ll see how long that lasts as I move into next month and face down three exams.

Though I’m not counting it towards any of my reading challenges, or even my total number of books read for the year, I’m reading the short story, “The Wendigo” by Algernon Blackwood.  I found out about the story from Litha Nelle’s Mini Macabre Review Monday post.  I knew that Wendigos originated from Native American folklore, and I’ve seen the episode about the frightening creature on “Supernatural”, but I had no idea there was also a Classic short story about it.  I’m also adding Pet Sematary by Stephen King to my wishlist since the creature shows up in the one famous King book I’ve never read.  I doubt I’ll get to it this year, but I hope to read it next October.

Finished: Human Cargo by Caroline Moorehead, which I read for one of my classes.  I had to write a detailed critical review of it, so I might post it at some point.  I also finished Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers.  I’ll do a Classics Club review for it before the end of the month.  Awhile back I reviewed Onyx Webb: Episode 1.  The authors, Richards Fenton and Andrea Waltz, re-released the first six episodes in two books and asked me to review Book 1.  I’ll be posting it sometime next week.

Finished: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling.  The discussion post and link-up will be up on the 30th.

DNF: Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness.  I gave it 120 pages before I gave up, which is far more than I usually give a book, so I feel like I gave it more than a fair chance.  All I will say is that if I wanted to read a story about a woman willingly giving up her agency to a domineering, “alpha male” vampire, I’d re-read Twilight.  At least Bella had the excuse of being a teenager instead of a grown extremely well-educated woman.
