I harvested about $30 worth of tomatoes from my garden yesterday! The Boyfriend and I made Caprese salad with a few of them, and they are the brightest red and tastiest tomatoes I’ve ever seen or eaten. I don’t know how I will return to store-bought tomatoes after the season is over.
I also cut a huge 15 lb. watermelon from the vine yesterday. We will probably be cutting and eating it today.
My tomato plant isn’t doing well, and I was reading that a lot of gardeners are having trouble, too. Apparently, even though tomatoes are heat-tolerant, it’s been too hot for too long, and tomatoes and other plants like green beans and peppers aren’t growing as much as they normally would and are taking much longer to ripen. I thought it was something I was doing wrong, and I’m glad to know that’s not the reason.
I’ve had the house to myself all weekend and didn’t have to work on Friday. I haven’t done much but binge shows on Netflix, play video games, read, and snuggle with my cats.
I found out that I can plant a few things over the next couple of months for a Fall harvest! I lost my broccoli, basil, spinach, and carrots during my first planting, but now I’ve got a chance to try again. I’m also going to grow another head of lettuce and some more radishes.
My tomato and watermelon plants are still growing at an alarming rate! My onions should be coming out of the ground next weekend, and I might be harvesting my spinach and green beans soon as well. Sadly, I won’t have any pumpkins this year. The seedlings died, and there isn’t enough time to try growing another. I’ll have to try again next year.
Since I was in Arizona and not able to post a check-in, this check-in is for 2 weeks.
I got a lot of steps and miles walked while I was in Arizona, but I came down with some kind of a stomach bug shortly after I got back.
I did so much walking during my trip that I earned another $5 towards something on my wishlist!
My garden exploded in growth while I was gone! My tomato and watermelon plants are determined to escape the trellis, and everything but my pepper plants are flowering. I’m not sure what is taking them longer to grow, but they still look healthy so I’m going to leave them be for now.
Next weekend I’ll be out of town, so I decided to harvest the head of lettuce in my garden this weekend. I just know that if I waited, it would bolt and get bitter. It’s a good thing I did, too, because we’ve gotten so much rain lately that the leaves at the very bottom had started to rot. Even after removing the bad stuff, though, I’ve still got more lettuce than the Boyfriend and I will probably be able to eat before it goes bad. We’re having lots of salads this week!
Since I won’t be home, there won’t be a check-in next week until I get back.
The Boyfriend and I went to the Celtic Festival yesterday. We had a blast, saw my favorite Scottish pipe and drum band, Albannach, and I got lots of steps and active minutes in. Unfortunately, I forgot to bring sunscreen or a hat with me and got a horrible sunburn on my face and arms. I will definitely be more prepared for the Renaissance Festival in September.
